Captains Log - Before the Voyage

Date  Events
4 March '02 The 21st century part of the voyage is now happening with the Information Technology set up going ahead. The Apple computer company representative Michael Farnan from Deskpower Computers today installing the apple on-line classroom using Apples latest iBook with airport wireless networking. This enables the students to use their iBook anywhere on the vessel for the on board courses as well as the acquisition of data for the Matthew Flinders Journals. A number of the journalists from the Australian newspaper who will be travelling as voyage crew also came on board to familiarise themselves with the vessel before its departure on Thursday midday.

5 March '02 Have received many positive calls about last nights 7.30 Report on the ABC. The hitherto steady trickle of provisions and equipment for the voyage is turning into a torrent with the new rescue boat, food stores, more computer equipment, crew clothing and outfits all arriving early in the morning.
The new ships compass will arrive later today. The phone fax and email are just coping with the ever increasing number of enquiries and bookings. A number of the voyage legs are now close to capacity.
A welcome break in the preparations happened for the crew and land support team today with a local brasserie putting on smorgasboard dinner. It provided a refreshing break and a chance for everyone to do a final catch up before the crew returned to the ship for a long evening of further preparations.

6 March '02 An early start with the fuel barge delivering 1800 litres of diesel. Great to see on the front page of The Australian newspaper the one day to go sign as well as great article on one of the student voyage crew. Discussions with publishers about the Trim book as well as other educational publications. Then worked right through till the early hours of the morning.
