Captains Log - Leg 1 - Sydney to Brisbane

Date Events
7 March '02 An early start with Breakfast Show interviews (TV and radio) for many of the crew. The last minute rush preparing for the official send of by the Governor of NSW at 12 midday.  More TV cameras than most of the crew had ever seen before made us all realise how much interest the voyage has generated. The big moment fially arrived and after speeches by the Federal Minister for the Environment, the  Governor of NSW, representatives of the Australian Newspaper and the Ausrtalian Navy, the Windeward bound left the wharf at the national Maritime Museum at 12 midday.
8 March '02 First night at sea and the run up to Newcastle uneventful - some seasickness amongst the ships compliment but uneventful voyage. Set up for the visits by schools with 70 kids turning up for the morning session. The Mayor hosted a breakfast, including for 20 kids who won a colouring competition. There was a steady stream of adults for the rest of the day with Open Ship from 3pm to 5pm
Attended a reception tonight before departure.

9 March '02 At Sea
Departed Newcastle at 2345 and cleared at 0015 and motor sailed until we cleared Sugar Loaf Point, where we were able to turn down wind with the wind on the starboard quarter. Thus followed an uneventful night rollicking down wind at an average of 4 knots. Dawn saw a continuation of the SE wind at a steady 10-15 knots and so we set all plain sail and made the most of it. The students worked with a will all day and many plankton specimens were obtained and recorded. Read with interest Matthew Flinders log for this same place 200 years ago. His comments were noted and could well have been my own words.
Trim relishes the freedom of the deck and visits every body in turn but curls up in my bunk when she is off watch. Reduced sail at dusk to night working rig.

2100 Pos 32 degrees 05 South 152 degrees 48 East Speed 6.5 knots

10 March '02 At Sea
The glorious SE continues to hold and we have been doing 6 knots under a clear sky for most of the day.
Set all plain sail at 0800 and passed Crescent Head at 1300. Now running three miles off shore and seeing the same view as Flinders, at this distance, seemingly unchanged.
0700 31 degrees 37 South 153 degrees 03 East Set T'gallant.
0900 31 degree 30 South 153 degrees 05 East Set main and jib and altered course to run inshore. Anchored in Coffs Harbour at 2300.

13 March '02
(at Yamba)
Spent the day alongside with a number of local schools watching the play and visiting the ship. Merchandise sales have been very good and the highlight of the day has been the "Welcome to Country" by the local indigenous community led by the local elder Della Walker, of the Yeagl Tribe, along with her sisters, Lillian & Jessie. The main emphasis of her welcome was an invitation/request to share this land that is used and owned by all of us, white and black alike. She also recited a poem that she has written and the beginning of it goes like this:

"The day the white men see our ways
and understand the things we say,
This land is ours we know for sure,
But we only want a little more.

For our youth that roam the streets
that we may find work that might entreat
For our boys it is so hard
the colour of the skin it makes them shamed
They cannot understand that this our land
must be looked after....................."

The junior crew on board has settled in very well and take quite a pride in the Ship and all that they do. Doug is progressing better with the school work and experiments and he and I have fine tuned the objectives to ensure regular website updates. We sail tomorrow morning for Southport.

14 March '02 Slipped and let go at Yamba at 07.30 with the Pilot on board. Ian Paulsen, the pilot, goes by the name of "Captain Mungbean". It seems to be a reflection on his diet and his philosophies in life. He is a very competent and very professional young man. The bar was a bit more active than when we came in and it was an exciting ride on the way out.

10.00 29 deg 21.55 S x 153 deg 25.6 E., sailing at a speed of 5.8 knots in a 15 KN SE wind with all four square sails, the main stays'l and Jib.
11.00 Wind increased to 20 knots and so struck the T'gallant and wore ship.
11.30 The ship's company were entertained by wave after wave of dolphins, many with young calves, and numbering in the hundreds. They came up from astern and took turns diving and playing around us before they moved away, to be immediately replace by another pod.
19.30 Altered course to 350 deg true, speed being 7.5 knots

To prevent us arriving too early in Southport, we beat out to sea against the SE wind, keeping a carefull eye on the projected speed back, we found ourselves 60 miles out and a wind that disappeared, allowing no choice but to start the engine and motor back in. Secure alongside at the Southport Yacht Club at 20.15 yo.

20 March '02 Alongside at Southport Yacht Club with only a trickle of visitors and only one performance of the play. It was, however, a great R&R stop and it seems most of the crew had family of some description either living there or visiting. We received a very warm welcome by the Club and the tightest berth I have ever put the ship into. She looked both out of place and yet strangely superior to the acres of moulded white plastic boats that made up the rest of the marina.
Trim disgraced herself by constantly visiting and seemingly admiring a gleaming white Riviera 40 moored on the other side of the pontoon. Perhaps she thought it was an upmarket version of her plastic catbox!!
We did, however, celebrate the birthday of Matthew Flinders himself on Saturday and this normally very dry ship found 2 bottles of champagne and some cordial for our younger crew members, to wash down a magnificently rich fruit cake supplied and baked with a special occasion in mind, by Paddy, a friend of Jonathon King.
Tomorrow, we sail for Brisbane.

21 March '02 After a careful period of blind pilotage threading the sandbars and cays of Moreton Bay, we arrived at the mouth of the Brisbane River at 0900 and, motor sailing most of the way, arrived at our berth at Riverside in the CBD at 1300 to be met by the Qld Sate Minister for the Environment. After a formal welcome and the usual media interviews, the ship settled down to an all too short visit, open ships, play presentations and 2 major functions hosted by Rotary Club of Brisbane. One for the Ship and her crew and one as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army's women and girls Refuge.
Whilst there, we received valuable information about Wreck Reef from the university of Queensland and The Queensland Museum. We leave Brisbane better equipped for Wreck Reef than when we arrived.
Trim has done her usual job of entertaining the Ship's visitors and the media and still continue to supervise everything that happens. She apparently kept one of the voyage crew awake for a while whilst on duty below looking for cockroaches. A duty she takes very seriously.
Embarking our new crew, we sailed at 11.00 from Brisbane bound for Bribie Island and the township of Bongaree.
