Matthew Flinders' circumnavigated the Australian continent in the 'Investigator' with a crew of sailors, officers and gentlemen scientists numbering 94. Many of these men are remembered in Flinders' journals, in the naming of landscape features along the coastline and, sadly, in the records of lives lost through illness and accidents. Many others are never mentioned.
Capable of carrying 28 people, with up to 16 of these as voyage crew, the Windeward Bound has a much smaller permanent crew as she circumnavigates Australia. An interesting mix of people from all over Australia, from a variety of backgrounds, the permanent crew share a common passion for square rig sailing and for the circumnavigation voyage.
Read on and find out all about the people who have run away to sea on the Windeward Bound.
