Meeeeoooooowwwww! Hello to all of my friends out there.
You wouldn’t believe where we are right now! Instead of being tied up at the wharf in Geraldton and exploring a new place (which I think is purrrfectly fun), we have made it all the way… back to Carnarvon!
What a voyage it has been! First we were roused out of bed at 3am to run a fire drill before we sailed. I nearly got soaked by the fire hose, so I bristled up and hissed at it and frightened it away. Whew!
Then we set sail and our first stop in Shark Bay was Monkey Mia, where people come to see the dolphins that live there. The crew went ashore and two of the dolphins came in to be fed while they were there. I stayed on the ship, sulking I’m afraid to say, because the dolphins were being fed fresh fish and no one thought to give me ANY!
After Monkey Mia we sailed around Cape Peron and headed for South Passage at the southern end of Dirk Hartog Island, and that is as far as we got for the next 3 days. The weather got a little too rough, so we had to stay at anchor. I didn’t mind that because I got out on deck and stretched out in the sun.
On the Tuesday it was Melbourne Cup day. We didn’t have a radio and we had no idea which horses were racing, so we made our own race, the Nowhere-Near-Melbourne Cup! It was great fun. Kiah made the ‘horses’ (which didn’t look anything like horses!) and everyone made up their own horses name and coloured them in. Then the race was on! I kept a good eye out to see if anyone was cheating, but also to make sure everyone had fun, which they did. Lance from BlueWatch won with his horse ‘Holy Sheet’ and he loved his prize - a packet of lolly snakes!!! Me, I would have prrrrrrreferred a nice, yummy fresh fish.
We finally decided it was time to sail on and we headed out through South Passage and right past the western-most point of mainland Australia - purrrfectly exciting! But by that night, and a long way out to sea, we realised that the strong head winds were just not going to let us go anywhere… so we turned around (on a ship you say, we came about) and headed back to Carnarvon.
It is strange being back here, because Carnarvon is not where we expected to be at this time, but it is also fun to be back here because now we know so many people and have friends here. It’s a bit like coming home.
We shall attempt to sail for Geraldton and Perth in a few weeks. In the meantime, I am going to catch up on some sleep in the sun and go and chat to those friendly tuna fishermen tied up next to out ship. Maybe they will have a little fresh fish for me…
This is Trim the Trooper, Ferocious Feline signing off…
