THE WINDEWARD BOUND
The 'Windeward Bound' is a brigantine that was built in Hobart in 1995 totally by volunteers and with the generous support of many sponsors. This beautiful brigantine has become a Tasmanian icon and an example of the traditional shipbuilding skills of Tasmanians.
The ship is operated by The Windeward Bound Trust and is a registered charity. The Trust operates Sail Training programs for young people and provides assistance for those young people that are financially disadvantaged.
The Windeward Bound was
purpose built to assist in finding solutions to the problems faced
by young people in our society. Young people are encouraged to contribute to reaffirm the Trust's basic principle of providing a 'Helping Hand' rather than a 'Handout'.
The Trust has widened the scope by which funds can be raised to include normal commercial money making
operations such as charters and special purpose voyages.
The Trust's deed ensures all funds received remain with the Trust and from time to time residual funds are used to provide scholarships or part scholarships for appropriately
deserving young people.
